FRED SCHIMMEL

Born 1928 in Amsterdam

Resided in South Africa from 1948.
A painter working in oil, watercolour, gouache and ink. He is also a graphic artist, making screenprints .

Studies: 1946-47 at the Kunstnijverheids-school now called Rietveld Akademie, Amsterdam.
He worked after immigrating as an assistant to a commercial printer in Johannesburg

From 1954 on Fred Schimmel taught volontarily at the Polly Street Art Centre , Johannesburg. He along with others such as Cecil Skotnes, Hannes Harrs, Larry Scully made a significant contribution to the development of African artists in this country through their teaching activities.

He launched his own graphic studio and founded the Graphic Club of South Africa in 1952.

He participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1960 in South Africa, Europe, the U.S.A. and Australia.
1964 he had a solo exhibition at the Egon Guenther Gallery in Johannesburg. Many others followed especially in the Netherlands and Germany.

He had a one-man show at the Art Association of Pretoria in April 2006.

He participated in many group exhibitions of Abalone Gallery and had one solo show in honour of his 80th birthday in September 2008 at the ABALONE GALLERY in HERMANUS .
