PIPPA SKOTNES

Born 1957 in Johannesburg

Pippa Skotnes is an artist and archeologist, printmaker and academic. Both her disciplines possess rich histories and her creative and research activities reveal her own awareness of time as an agent of change and transformation. By one of those twists that characterize history and reveal the process of time, history is neatly reflected in Skotnes becoming the 1993 Young Artist Award Winner for Fine Art.

A strong sense of history and tradition infuse Skotnes’ visual images but the connections she makes between past and present imbue her work with contemporary significance. Her formal studies in archeology and printmaking infuse her etchings and books with African and Western cultural and aesthetic references and pose important debates about image transformation.

Skotnes is fascinated by the material culture and imagery of the San, the earliest inhabitants of Southern Africa and she published a series of books and articles about San culture.
