LUCKY SIBIYA
Born 1942 in Vryheid, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, was killed 1999 in a car accident.
Sibiya was largely self-taught but received some guidance from well-known artist Cecil Skotnes and the late Bill Ainslie while in Johannesburg.
He started his artistic career by carving pattern on gourds. This led to his wood panel carvings.
His first solo exhibition of these panels was in Johannesburg in 1974, meanwhile exhibitions of his wood panels and prints such as woodcuts and serigraphs took place regularly. He has created murals in wood and mosaic for the Leratong Hospital in Krugersdorp and the Rainbow Chickens Farm in KwaZulu Natal.
He was a prodigious carver who executed his design with skill and sensitivity. Most of his themes were related to aspects of Zulu history which he applied decoratively and colourfully.
In 1975 he produced a volume of 15 colour woodcuts, UMABATHA, based on the playwright Welcome Msotlisis interpretation of Macbeth in the Zulu idiom.
