JAN VISSER

Born 1933 in Windhoek, Namibia

A painter and graphic artist of landscapes, seascapes, still life, figures and portraits.
He is also a qualified lawyer, who gave up his profession in 1968 to work as an artist.

Jan Visser studied at the Hugo Naude Art Centre, Worcester, under Jean Welz from 1964 – 70, privately under Alfred Krenz and through the University of South Africa for three years. From 1971–73 he studied graphic art under Anna Vorter, the prominent artist from Pretoria.

In 1980 Jan Visser became a founder member of the artists guild in Cape Town. 1981 and 1982 and from 1986 he joined the staff at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town. In 1974 he visited Europe, working in the graphic studio of Stanley William Hayter in Paris and at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Exhibitions: 1970 Artists Gallery, Cape Town, first of eleven solo exhibitions. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions from 1971 in SA, the U.S.A. and Europe.

His work is represented in the Pretoria Art Museum, University of the Orange Free State, University of Stellenbosch, Willem Annandale Art Gallery, Lichtenburg.
